LACBA’s Shattuck-Price Award to Be Bestowed on Pasternak, Hennigan

Outstanding Jurist Award to Go to Late Judge O’Connell

Attorneys David J. Pasternak and Michael Hennigan have been chosen to receive the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s highest honor, the Shattuck-Price Outstanding Lawyer Award, LACBA announced yesterday.

It also said that the Outstanding Jurist Award will be conferred posthumously on Beverly Reid O’Connell, who was a judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

The awards will be presented at LACBA’s 140-Year Anniversary & Awards Gala on Sept. 27.

Pasternak, a member of Pasternak, Pasternak & Alsbrook, was LACBA’s president in 1977-78 and State Bar president 2015-16. He has been both president of the Barristers, comprised of young lawyers, and chair, more than 30 years later, of the Senior Lawyers Section.

For more than 20 years, he has been on the Board of Directors of Bet Tzedek, and has served as its president.

His law degree is from Loyola.

Founding Partner

Hennigan is a founding partner of McKool Smith Hennigan. During his legal career of more than 40 years, he has handled nationwide consumer class actions and commercial fraud cases, obtaining more than $8 billion in judgments and settlements.

He has served as a LACBA trustee and has chaired the Litigation Section.

Early in his career. Hennigan was a trial lawyer with the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice.

He earned his law degree at Arizona College of Law where, after graduation, he lectured in research and writing.

Death at 52

O’Connell died Oct. 8, 2017, after collapsing at a meeting and going into a coma. She was 52.

Following graduation from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1990 and her admission to the State Bar that year, she practiced with the firm of Morrison & Foerster until 1995, when she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. She was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2005 and to the District Court in 2013.

She taught courses at Loyola Law School and Pepperdine University School of Law.
